Description

Mint State 1839-D Quarter Eagle
Very Scarce Bold Stem Variety

1839-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-B, McCloskey-B, R.4. The Bold Stem reverse variety, with the stem tip just left of the upright of the D in 5 D. Another diagnostic of the Bold Stem is the arrowheads touching the CA of AMERICA. Numerous die cracks on the reverse typify this variant. Both varieties are examples of the popular Classic Head, Obverse Mintmark two-year quarter eagle type, produced as well at the branch mints in Charlotte and New Orleans. But, since Dahlonega produced no quarter eagles the year before, the 1839-D is the only D-mint Classic Head representative of the denomination.
The Dahlonega Mint did make half eagles in both 1838 and 1839, but the 1839s are all of the succeeding Liberty Head design--so many type or date collectors opt for an 1839-D quarter eagle and an 1838-D half eagle, further increasing the demand for this low-mintage quarter eagle issue of 13,674 coins.
Winter estimates that only 5,500 examples were made with the rarer Bold Stem reverse. This piece has pleasing antique-gold coloration, with fewer abrasions and more eye appeal than one might infer from the grade. Some minor central strike softness, visible on the high points of Liberty's hair, is typical. Census: 7 in 61, 7 finer (8/09).(Registry values: P4)
