Description

Rare 1884 Liberty Half Eagle, PR65 Ultra Cameo

1884 $5 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Only three examples of this rare, underrated issue have been graded as PR65 Ultra Cameo, by NGC, as of January 2008, with none finer. PCGS has yet to certify even one specimen at this lofty grade level. The overall rarity of this issue, at any level of preservation, can be demonstrated by the fact that, as of this writing, none have been auctioned by Heritage within the past 15 years.
Breen's diagnostics of proof 1884 half eagles include a die scratch slanting up from the right base of the T in LIBERTY and a rust pit on the lower end of the upright of 1, between and above the serifs. Both are clearly present on this specimen. If there were any question about this coin's proof status, however, it would be answered by the razor-sharp striking detail on every design element, and by the obvious deep mirror finish in the fields and heavy frost on the devices.
The preservation of this coin is likewise impressive, even if a tiny reeding mark in the lower left obverse field keeps it from being pristine. There is a shallow planchet void (as produced) on Liberty's chin, and the corner of her mouth is incomplete due to a hint of die polish, but these unimportant mint-made features have almost no impact on either the eye appeal or the technical grade of this beautiful, conditionally unsurpassed Gem.
Anyone desiring to assemble a set of the finest-known proof Liberty half eagles should take note of this rare opportunity, which may not be repeated for many years.
