Description

Extremely Rare 1862 Doubled Die Obverse Gold Dollar

1862 G$1 MS65 NGC. FS-001, Breen-6074. Doubled Die Obverse. This is a fascinating doubled die variety, one of the clearest in the series of U.S. gold coinage. The shifted details that are visible exhibit approximately 25% separation. In addition to the die doubling, this example also exhibits machine doubling on the obverse. This phenomenon is especially evident at Liberty's mouth, with an extra set of lips from the machine doubling slightly to the left, and an additional set of lips visible from the die doubling slightly above and to the right. This is a frosty Gem with brilliant yellow-gold luster and pristine surfaces. NGC has only certified seven examples of this variety. Doubled Die Census: 1 in 65, 0 finer (7/06).
