Description
Desirable 1889 Three Dollar, PR64 Cameo
1889 $3 PR64 Cameo PCGS. It is an interesting observation that the Mint produced (or reported, at the very least) a much larger proof manufacture of 1888-dated three dollar gold pieces than those bearing the 1889 date, specifically 291 of the former, as opposed to only 129 of the latter. Bowers' series reference says that the three dollar gold denomination ended "without fanfare in 1889 with a circulation strike mintage of 2,300 coins, many of which were never released." The low business-strike emission exerts upward pressure on proofs, about which Bowers says that proofs bearing the 1889 date are "generally regarded as among the rarest of this era, certification data notwithstanding."The surfaces on both sides of this PR64 Cameo piece offer wonderfully stark black-on-gold contrast, and certainly appear to verge on a Deep Cameo designation. Reddish-gold high-point accents add to the allure, although minor contact marks in the fields, mostly on the obverse, explain the grade. This piece nonetheless remains highly desirable, with broad appeal. Population: 8 in 64 Cameo, 4 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N4719)
