Description

Deeply Toned MS64 1873-S Arrows Quarter
Tied for Second Finest Certified

1873-S 25C Arrows MS64 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. Open 3, as are both variants of the 1873-S quarter. Obverse 1 has an irregular date that slopes downward, and on Reverse A the mintmark is small, clearly defined, and positioned above the upright of the R in QUAR. Only 156,000 pieces were struck in the West Coast facility, and as usual, most were circulated with few examples set aside in mint condition. Only 23 pieces have been certified in Mint State by both of the major services, minus an unknown number of resubmissions. At the MS64 level, this is the only piece certified by PCGS, while NGC has certified three (8/08). Only one coin is finer, a PCGS MS65. Deep scarlet, blue, and gray toning is seen over each side. Sharply defined in all areas, there are no obvious abrasions, and the mint luster glows strongly beneath the deep toning.
