Outstanding Red Superb Gem 1924 Cent

1924 1C MS67 Red PCGS. Ex: Jack Lee Collection. The 1924 Lincoln cent, sporting a mintage of 75,178,000 pieces, is readily available, even in comparatively high Mint State grades. Various commentators have noted this availability, including Q. David Bowers (2008), who described it as "common in all grades, including Mint State," and David Lange (1996), who notes that "... gems should not be considered rare." Indeed, at the MS65 Red level, there are sufficient extant survivors to meet current demand, and even Premium Gems can be acquired with a little patience and searching. MS67 examples, however, are elusive, and higher-grade specimens are virtually nonexistent
The surfaces of this remarkable Superb Gem are bright and primarily copper-orange. Strongly lustrous with hints of frostiness throughout. The strike is slightly above-average for the date, though Lincoln's hair and beard exhibit the usual weakness. On the reverse, the wheat ears are sharp and crisp and all lettering is clear, despite die clashing. At this lofty level, the combined certified population shows just five MS67 Red examples, one graded by NGC and four by PCGS, with none numerically finer (6/09).(Registry values: N991)
