Description

Important 1855-D Quarter Eagle, AU55 Details

1855-D $2 1/2 --Cleaned--ANACS. AU55 Details. Variety 18-M. The surfaces show fine hairlines from a light cleaning primarily in the fields, with a few more on Liberty. Sharp on the stars and central devices, but weak on the eagle's legs and left (right facing) claw, and on the dentils, which are always poorly struck. Some later die state examples show a thin die crack which connects the lower right side of the O to the lower left serif of F in OF, this crack being present on the present specimen.
The original mintage of 1,123 pieces was reduced by time and attrition to perhaps 50 or so. An important and rare coin that is seldom found in any grade.(Registry values: P2)
