Description

Reflective 1796 JR-2 Dime, AU53

1796 10C AU53 NGC. JR-2, R.4. The obverse has star 15 placed next to the bust with a point lightly touching the drapery. The reverse has a berry below the left side of the first S. Each of these features are diagnostic for the dies, and together they identify the variety. Six varieties are known for the 1796 dime coinage, and all are scarce or rare. Two varieties are rated R.3, two more are rated R.4, and the two remaining varieties are rated R.5.
Both sides have decent strength of detail with reflective light gray surfaces and hints of pale gold toning. The fields are reflective and both sides have the usual hairlines and blemishes that are expected for the grade.
