Wonderful 1909-S VDB Cent, MS66 Red
The Young Collector's Dream Coin

1909-S VDB 1C MS66 Red PCGS. CAC. The 1909-S VDB is not only every young U.S. coin collector's dream, it is the first rare coin that most U.S. collectors knew of--a wonderful, unattainable prize that calls to mind images of simpler times and blue Whitman Lincoln cent folders. How many of us feverishly searched through penny rolls for that elusive find? And is there any Lincoln cent collector who does not remember that impossibly low mintage figure of 484,000 coins?
Now that the boys and girls have grown into men and women, some can actually afford to buy a nice example, since the odds of finding one in circulation, in any grade, are somewhat less than the odds of getting hit by lightning by standing in one spot in a thunderstorm with a metal umbrella.
The present piece, in Premium Gem Red condition and with the CAC sticker, is just about the finest obtainable. PCGS has certified only nine pieces as MS67 Red (8/09), and even if all of those are separate coins (a dubious proposition), they are most likely in quite strong hands.
This piece has splendid, distraction-free surfaces, with bright golden-yellow coloration on both sides. The strike is bold, as is usually the case, even on the designer's initials VDB that are sometimes weak. For pedigree purposes we note a single small dark fleck on the middle of C in CENT, but this piece offers up both tremendous eye appeal and a healthy helping of nostalgia in equal measure.(Registry values: N2998)
