Description
NGC 1796 AU 55. High 6. This piece was undoubtedly a part of the Colonel Green hoard of some 200 high grade 1796 quarters. Most of the high grade '96 quarters that exist today are from this hoard, and almost all are of the High 6 (B-2) variety. This is an especially impressive coin. The surfaces overall are quite clean, being free from any major detracting marks. The only mentionable surface flaws are several shallow adjustment marks on the reverse and a small planchet chip out of the obverse rim at 3 o'clock (a common trait on the Colonel Green coins). Light in the centers with gradually deepening gray-russet and blue toning toward the rims on each side. The strike is strong on the obverse with the usual weakness on the eagle's head and breast feathers. A significant coin for the collector as 1796 quarters represent a one-year type as well as having a low mintage of only 6,146 pieces. Trends $21,500 in AU 50, $24,750 in MS 60.
