Description

High-End 1870 Standard Silver Quarter
Judd-915, PR65 Red and Brown

1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-915, Pollock-1011, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown NGC.
Design.
The central figure of the obverse is a bust of Liberty facing right. Liberty is wearing a tiara with an eponymous inscription and her hair tied in a pony tail. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the bust above, and a scroll with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is below. The reverse features the words 25 / CENTS encircled by a wreath of oak and laurel, with the inscriptions STANDARD SILVER above and the date below. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Commentary.
The Standard Silver coinage was an attempt to redeem the paper fractional currency or "shinplasters"--so-called because the notes quickly wore out and became filthy--that proliferated during the Civil War. The Standard Silver coinage was .900 fine, but lighter-weight than the regular silver coinage, which was still being hoarded after the war. It was hoped that the lighter-weight coinage would circulate because of its lesser intrinsic value. The concept was never adopted, however. The copper patterns were made for sale in sets with other denominations. USPatterns.com estimates a population of fewer than a dozen examples extant.

Physical Description.
Well struck, with attractive mint red and crimson toning on the obverse. The reverse has an appealing golden-brown color. A pleasing specimen of this popular pattern. This piece is the only Red and Brown non-Cameo example at NGC, although a PR66 Red and Brown Cameo piece at that service is numerically finer (11/08). PCGS has certified two PR65 Red and Brown coins and a couple of Brown examples.

Provenance.
Ex: Lewis Reagan Collection (Stack's, 1/1996), lot 650.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
