Description

Popular 1855 Type Two Gold Dollar, MS62

1855 G$1 MS62 PCGS. James B. Longacre's redesign of the gold dollar in 1854 resulted in the Type Two, or Indian Princess, Small Head design. His idea of making the gold dollar coins broader by 2 mm, yet retaining the 1.672-gm weight, resulted in a coin that was too thin and difficult to strike. As a result, this series was produced for a mere three years (1854 through 1856), although the final year saw only a scant mintage of pieces from the San Francisco Mint. The present MS62 example displays rich orange-gold patina imbued with whispers of lavender and sky-blue on the obverse and greenish-gray on the reverse. Generally well struck, with relatively well preserved, somewhat subdued surfaces. What appear to be faint roller marks are visible in the central and right obverse.
