Description

Stunning Select 1848-D Quarter Eagle

1848-D $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Variety 10-M. A crisply struck and delightful representative of this mid-date Dahlonega issue, one less available than its reputation as a comparatively common branch mint quarter eagle might suggest. The strongly lustrous, slightly granular surfaces have a pleasing appearance, predominantly yellow-gold with zones of richer orange-gold color.
Between these factors, the overall visual appeal is high, a feature shared by a number of other examples. Doug Winter (2003) comments: "For many collectors, the 1848-D quarter eagle makes an ideal type coin." He describes the issue as well-prepared and characterizes most examples as having "a good strike and good luster." Even for this comparatively well-produced issue, the coin offered here is far above the norm, and would fit beautifully into any connoisseur's set of Dahlonega gold. Doubtless Condition Census material, with none graded finer by either NGC or PCGS and the extant numbers inflated by resubmissions. Population: 6 in 63, 0 finer (6/07).(Registry values: P2)
