Condition Census 1916 Doubled Die Buffalo Nickel
1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse MS64 PCGS. FS-016, Breen-2599. Listed on page 128 of the 2006 Guide Book. Although popular today, this Buffalo Nickel error remained unknown for more than four decades after its production. The first published report (per Lange, 2000) appeared in the July, 1962 edition of The Numismatic Scrapbook. Today, circulated examples number only 100-150 coins. Mint State representatives are even rarer, and Lange's estimate is no more than 10 pieces. PCGS reports six Uncirculated examples, all falling into the MS 62-64 grade range (8/05), and NGC has seen a further eight coins graded MS63 through MS64. Allowing for possible resubmissions, the population reports of the major grading services appear to confirm the accuracy of Lange's estimate.Given the rarity of this error nickel in Mint State, the attractive example that we highlight here should be of obvious importance to advanced Buffalo nickel collectors. The surfaces have been carefully preserved with a colorful endowment of greenish-gray patina over both sides. This deepens to antique-gold and crimson near the peripheral areas. We have no complaints about the sharp striking quality, save for a small amount of detail at the central regions. The boldly doubled digits in the date are readily evident to the naked eye. The fields and devices are smooth enough to warrant consideration even at the MS65 grade level, but accuracy compels us to mention a single, small corrosion spot on the obverse just before the Indian's chin. The latter feature notwithstanding, we unhesitatingly declare this coin as one of the finest known survivors of this rare and popular 20th century error.
