Description
Appealing 1911-D Gem Quarter Eagle
1911-D $2 1/2 MS65 PCGS. The 1911-D is the key to the Indian Head quarter eagle series in all grades. It boasts the lowest mintage (55,680 pieces) of the series, few examples of which were apparently saved at the time of issue (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933). PCGS/NGC population/census figures indicate that most survivors are in the Very Fine to mid-Uncirculated grade range. Gems are scarce, with approximately 80 MS65 examples having been seen by both services, several of which are likely resubmissions. Five Premium Gems have been reported, and none finer. In a September 17, 1996 Numismatic News article entitled "Don't Overlook Indian Head Quarter Eagles," Paul Green writes of the 1911-D that:
"It had not become any more common over the years. It always has, and always will be the key date in the Indian Head quarter eagle set. Its prices routinely run four or five times higher than the prices of common dates. None question that it is the key date to the set and worth the price."
The MS65 coin being offered in the present lot displays radiantly lustrous surfaces that yield a gorgeous peach-gold patination, accented with a few splashes of bluish-gray on the obverse. A powerful strike sharpens the design features, including bold delineation in the Indian's hair, headdress feathers, and the eagle's plumage. The mintmark is also strong. We can discern no significant marks, which is unusual for the type, considering the vulnerability of the exposed, raised fields. A hardly noticeable alloy spot is visible on each side. This lovely piece is encapsulated in a green-label holder. Population: 17 in 65, 3 finer (6/07).(Registry values: N10218)
