Impressive Choice 1911-D Quarter Eagle

1911-D $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. Assembling a set of a series with a single, distinct key has been a challenge enjoyed by collectors for decades, though such an approach to numismatics brings with it significant challenges. How does one approach the key issue? Many collectors will settle for a slightly lower-grade example compared to the rest of the set, such as an AU55 key in an otherwise Select Mint State set, or opt to build a set around a key-date coin in a certain condition. Certain fortunate enthusiasts, however, can pursue both common and elusive dates in top-of-the-line condition.
For such discerning Indian quarter eagle enthusiasts, eye appeal is of chief importance, and the centerpiece 1911-D should be selected with care. As Fuljenz and Winter write in their A Collector's Guide to Indian Quarter Eagles: "The quality of eye appeal seen on the 1911-D Quarter Eagle varies greatly. There are some very handsome coins known in all grade ranges, but most collectors wind-up with an example that is very low-end for the grade. ... An otherwise unexceptional set can be made very desirable with the addition of a very nice 1911-D."
The present piece is one of the beauties. The softly frosted, mildly granular luster peculiar to this issue prevails on largely honey-gold surfaces that offer lively, welcome rose accents at the lower reverse. The central details are solid, marks are few, and the overall eye appeal is strong. A single black speck that may appear in the image close to the Indian's chin is not on the coin, but rather part of the plastic encapsulation. Highly elusive any finer, with just 21 such pieces certified by PCGS (5/08).
