Description

Desirable 1795 Small Eagle Five

1795 $5 Small Eagle--Cleaned--ANACS. AU50 Details. Breen-6412, BD-3, High R.3. Star 11 overlies the Y of LIBERTY and joins star 12, the only 1795 obverse with this feature. On the reverse, a leaf touches the bottom of U in UNITED, another touches the right bottom of the left foot of N and extends past the center of N, and the wreath has four berries, two each side, inside and out.
A few minor hairlines are visible on each side, indicative of a past light cleaning. However, the surfaces have bright greenish-gold luster with evidence of mirrored fields. There are the usual minor handling marks that are normally seen on these early gold coins. The combination of soft metal and old age have barely taken their toll; this piece hardly looks its age. Traces of light wear are evident on the highpoints, yet the overall eye appeal is excellent.
