Description
Popular 1800 C-1 Draped Bust Half Cent
1800 1/2 C C-1, B-1, R.2. Die State 4. MS61 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. Wide date; Single terminal leaves. Slightly later die state than the previous example. The lowest curl is breeched at its bottom and rim crumbling appears on the border over LIB and continues down to at least 9 o'clock. The reverse rust lumps do not solidly connect the E of UNITED to the wreath, but they nearly do. This is an attractive and appealing example with intermingled chestnut and olive-brown, together with lighter tan color faded from mint red. A few tiny splashes of maroon and steel-brown are visible on both sides. The surfaces have a few minor blemishes, including a noticeable mark along Liberty's jaw, and a small reverse rim scrape at 9 o'clock. A couple other smaller marks are visible on both sides. The exact mintage of 1800 Half Cents is not specifically known, or is subject to speculation. The Mint coinage report gave the total of 211,530 Half Cents struck during the year. Cohen felt that the first two deliveries, totaling 8,622 coins, were the 1797 Low Head issues, leaving a balance of 202,908 Half Cents dated 1800. This same figure is recorded in the Guide Book and by Manley. Walter Breen felt, however, that the third delivery of 1800, amounting to 12,356 were also dated 1797, leaving a net mintage of 190,552 Half Cents of 1800. In the absence of additional records, any of these figures could be considered correct.Ex: J.J. Teaparty (12/24/1985). Envelope Included.(Registry values: P5)
