1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6459, BD-4, R.2. There are four die marriages of 1810 half eagles. In a departure from the prior two years of the series, 1808 and 1807, none of the 1810 pieces are overdates. The four 1810 varieties each receive separate Guide Book listings, and are readily distinguished. BD-1 and BD-2 are Small Date varieties, identified by sloped 1s, while BD-3 and BD-4 are Large Date varieties, confirmed by the flat top to the 1s. BD-2 and BD-3 share the same Small 5 reverse. BD-1 has a Tall 5 with an open lower loop, while BD-4 possesses a Large 5 with broad, closed lower loop. The two Small 5 varieties are great rarities. The Tall 5 variety is scarce, but collectible. This leaves BD-4, The Large Date, Large 5 variety, as the most available 1810 variety. However, BD-4 must be seen within the context of its Capped Bust Left type. Any old tenor half eagle is much scarcer than the lighter weight Classic, Liberty, and Indian types that dominate half eagle appearances.
This straw-gold representative is well struck, since most design elements are sharply impressed. A hint of incompleteness is noted on the left (facing) claw and the upper reaches of the shield. A few obverse denticles near 9 o'clock show slight merging of detail. There is no hint of adjustment or roller marks. The fields are remarkably smooth, and the devices are also unabraded. Satin luster dominates the borders and design features. MS64 is the highest collectible grade for BD-4, since as of (6/07), PCGS has certified only two pieces finer, an MS65 and an MS66.
