Description
Splendid 1794 S-31 Cent
1794 1C Head of 1794. S-31, B-13, R.1. AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. A plentiful variety, and the present example misses the condition census, yet it is extremely attractive and fully desirable. The obverse die has heavy chips in the left field, and is instantly recognized by this feature. It was combined with five different reverse dies, and only the first two combinations, S-30 and S-31, are at all common. The others, S-39, S-40, and NC2, are all extremely rare. Each of the five reverse dies is distinctive. This die has an extremely long fraction bar which nearly touches the numerator and the final 0 of the denominator. Splendid olive-brown surfaces with sharp design elements. Both sides have lighter tan color at the borders. This is a later die state with lapped dies. Several leaves on the reverse are merely outlined, or they have detached leaf tips. The letters IT of UNITED are weakened with tiny abrasions left from the original planchet.Ex: Hall; New Netherlands (10/1951), lot 1445; Willard C. Blaisdell (12/7/1969).
