Description

1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems. S-134, B-4, High R.3--Environmental Damage--NCS. Fine Details. VG8 EAC. There is a prominent die chip before Liberty's throat. It is difficult to determine the precise die state using the Breen descriptions. A faint crack between the 9 and last 7 in the date shows on this coin, although it does not yet touch the 7. Breen calls a crack "through 97" the hallmark of Die State III. However, there is no sign of a reverse crack from the rim above (M)E to a leaf, as Breen describes for Die State II. The reverse margins are weak above the legend, but not below, so a crack extending to the leaf would show if present. The lower left portion of the reverse is extremely weak, with the 1 in the fraction faint and UNITED S not only illegible but invisible. On the obverse the ribbon and left dentilation is weak as well, but not extremely so. The lower obverse details including the date and lower tresses are robust, however. Examination with a glass reveals no singular distractions. Envelope Included.(Registry values: N491)
