Exceptional 1929 Double Eagle, MS65

1929 $20 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Like many issues of this era, the 1929 double eagle was produced in large quantities with an extremely low survival rate. Nearly every one of the 1,779,750 coins was later melted, leaving a net population of just a few hundred coins.
At one time the 1929 double eagle was considered a major rarity in the Saint-Gaudens series. With the importation of examples from overseas in recent decades, this issue is available to a wider audience. A single group of about 40 coins was discovered in England in 1984. In A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, Dave Bowers writes: "For the first time in modern numismatic history the 1929 is readily available and somewhat affordable (but hardly inexpensive). Now, many collections will end with the 1929 date instead of 1928 as formerly." NGC and PCGS have certified nearly 300 submissions in all grades, but only 32 of those coins grade MS65 or finer. In the 16 years that we have tracked our auctions, we have offered 93 examples of the 1929 twenty, including six offerings of MS66 coins and 18 in MS65, including duplicate appearances of a smaller number of coins.
This bold specimen has a sharp strike with frosty yellow and orange-gold luster. A few minuscule abrasions are evident on each side although they are of no consequence. A lovely piece, this Gem carries exceptional aesthetic appeal. Population: 22 in 65, 5 finer (9/09).
