Description

Popular 1798 Large 8 Half Eagle, BD-2, R.5

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Star Reverse AU53 NGC. BD-2, Breen-6426, R.5. Struck from the same obverse die as the 1798 Small Eagle rarity, this variety is rare and important as well. A heavy die crack through the base of the date identifies the obverse die. Additional cracks are evident in various locations on the shattered obverse and on the reverse. This attractive half eagle has lustrous green-gold color with faint reflectivity in the fields. Both sides have the usual quota of circulation marks that are consistent with the grade. Census: 11 in 53, 66 finer (5/08).
