Description

Handsome Near-Gem 1812 Five Dollar
Wide 5 D, BD-1

1812 $5 MS64 NGC. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. A lustrous straw-gold Choice gold type coin that is splendidly devoid of abrasions. A mint-made strike-through between the right (facing) wing and AMERICA is all that limits the grade. Struck from boldly clashed dies. A good strike with moderate incompleteness on the shield and left wing. The curved die scratch (as made) on the horizontal shield stripes is as diagnostic for the variety as the widely spaced denomination. An impressive example in a grade that provides an excellent combination of quality and value. Census: 30 in 64, 10 finer (5/08).
