Description
Choice Mint State 1807 Draped Bust Dime
1807 10C MS64 PCGS. JR-1, R.2. This is the only die marriage for the year, and it is hands down the most common date of the design, from a mintage of 165,000 coins. Even so, few Choice or Gem Mint State examples survive today, and those that do appear on the market do so infrequently. They are always quickly snapped up by anxious type collectors seeking to fill another hole in their album, or another slot in their slab box. These coinage dies saw extensive use, especially the reverse which was also used for quarter eagles. Like the present example, nearly all 1807 half dimes are from late die states with heavily clashed obverse and reverse, contributing to considerable peripheral weakness. The few early die state examples with strong border details all reside in the collections of specialists who have paid dearly for them. This near-Gem has impressive ivory and gold color with underlying frosty silver luster. Pale blue color may be seen near the borders. The central obverse and reverse are boldly rendered. Overall, this is a highly desirable and appealing example, a coin that the connoisseur will appreciate.
