Description
Remarkable Gem 1931-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
1931-D $20 MS65 PCGS. The rarity of this D-mint issue should be readily evident to all collectors since Akers referred to a group of fifteen to twenty examples that surfaced in the mid-1980s as a "hoard." While these coins were sufficient to knock the 1931-D out of the same rarity class as the vaunted 1930-S, most of them graded no higher than MS63. This leaves Gem specimens, like the one offered here, as extreme condition rarities. While this example displays the bold impression that typifies its issue, its radiant surfaces are anything but common. The typical 1931-D twenty is among the least attractive of the late date issues, but this piece displays swirling, frosty luster and bright, orange-gold surfaces that yield to copper and pink at selected areas. The surfaces are essentially devoid of post-production impairments although, for pedigree purposes alone, we note a small lateral abrasion on Liberty's lower right leg. Although PCGS reports 2 specimens in MS66, we doubt whether they can compare to the outstanding eye appeal of this gem. Population: 13 in 65, 2 finer (11/05).From The Phillip H.
