Description
Full Head Gem 1927-S Quarter Dollar
1927-S 25C MS65 Full Head PCGS. Only the 1916 quarter has a lower mintage than the 396,000 examples reported for the '27-S. Of course, the limited mintage of the 1918/7-S is probably lower, although an exact production figure for that variety is unknown. This example is impressive, not only for its full head, but also for its sharp shield definition, missing only two of the rivets, and for its full reverse definition with complete feather detail. It is a frosty and highly lustrous Gem with frosty silver surfaces and no trace of toning. The rarity of this issue in Full Head Gem is comparable to the rarity of similar-grade examples of the overdate, the 1924-D, and the 1926-D, and it is substantially rarer than the 1916. J.H. Cline, a specialist in the series and author of Standing Liberty Quarters (the fourth edition was published earlier this year), writes: "The 1927-S has such a low mintage that there are few Full Heads in existence. If all Full Heads had been withheld from circulation, it would still have been the scarcest S mint of the entire series excluding of course the 1918/7-S. I give the 1927-S a liberal estimate of one percent struck with Full Heads. That would leave about 3,900 that [were] struck with Full Heads. This number decreases considerably because, indeed, some did make it into circulation. Your author would rate it three to five times rarer than the 1916 in Full Head. With that said, the present price for a 1927-S FH is not in line with the real scarcity of the coin. In the 45 years your author has collected and admired these coins, the ratio I have observed is at least one 1927-S to twenty-five 1916s with Full Heads."
