Description

Rare Judd-104 1839 Gobrecht Dollar, PR64

1839 PS$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR64 NGC. Silver. Die Alignment III (coin turn, eagle flying level). The majority of 1839 restrikes are found in Die Alignment IV, but a small number, such as this one, are known in Die Alignment III. These pieces have reverse die cracks similar to the Type II coins with a faint crack seen at the tops of MERI in AMERICA on the reverse. It is believed that these coins were most likely struck in the late 1860s (or perhaps slightly later); a time period when the Die Alignment III Judd-60s were being made. In any case, the Die Alignment III dollars are very scarce and are estimated to have a total mintage of approximately 100 pieces.
This is a spectacular coin that is deeply mirrored on each side. Each side shows light, even golden-brown toning that deepens around the obverse to a deep brown and cobalt-blue. Fully struck throughout and lightly hairlined with a couple of small planchet flakes in the left obverse field.
