Description
Richly Toned PR64 1836 Original Gobrecht Dollar
1836 PS$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR64 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I (head of Liberty opposite the DO in DOLLAR). As with the other PR64 Gobrecht dollar above, this piece also lacks the die scratch above the eagle's wing, indicating it was struck in the first production run in early December 1836.In his 1982 article in Coin World, Robert Julian gave a bit of interesting background information regarding the hiring of Christian Gobrecht:
"On Aug. 27 William Kneass suffered a stroke which partially paralyzed one side. Although he was later to recover to a great extent, it was clear to the Director that another engraver was urgently required. Therefore, on Aug. 28, 1835, Dr. Patterson wrote Treasury Secretary Levi Woodbury requesting the immediate employment of Gobrecht as "second" engraver at the salary of $1,500 per year. (Gobrecht had, years before, turned down the insignificant salary of $600 to be assistant engraver as he was then earning much more than that.) Woodbury quickly granted the necessary permission and the new engraver began his duties at the Mint within a relatively short time."
This is a spectacular coin for three reasons. First, the degree of preservation is nothing less than extraordinary. The only obvious or mentionable surface disturbance is a shallow scratch in the right obverse field. Second, the fields are deeply reflective with no trace of haziness. Third, and perhaps most immediately obvious, each side is richly toned. Deep aqua-blue, gray, and rose toning is seen on each side, but obverse and reverse differ in the distribution of these colors. One of the finest survivors of the 400 proofs struck from this first run of Gobrecht dollars.
