Description

British rule, Madras Presidency 4-piece gilt Cash Set 1803, all certified by PCGS, as follows: 1 Cash KM315, PR65, frosted lion holding the British crown in high relief; 5 Cash KM318, PR66, deep mirrors surrounding the crest of the East India Company frosted, as are all letters of the legend; 10 Cash KM319, PR65, EIC crest in frosted relief, as last; and 20 Cash KM321b, PR64, an area of green verdigris in the gilding to left of the date, otherwise frosted with mirrored fields as the other pieces in this set. Values on reverses are in Persian and English. These are all gilt copper proofs struck at the Soho Mint on order for the East India Company, specimens of the coins made for use in the British colony. An exceptional and quite beautiful set, all from the J.J. Pittman Collection sale of August 1999, lot 5036. Recent auction records are sparse, no sets found, individual pieces only, most recently a gilt 1 Cash piece sold in London for some $500. Rare!
