Description
Near Mint 1804 Small 8 Half Eagle Dramatic Late Obverse Die State
1804 $5 Small 8 AU58 NGC. Breen-6443, B. 3-E, Miller-66, R.5. This well struck Borderline Uncirculated Early Half Eagle displays substantial olive-gold luster, diminished but not broken in the exposed fields. A few minor handling marks on the obverse field and on Liberty's cap do not distract. The rare Breen 3-E variety features a high, recut 4 in the date, and the lowest right leaf on the olive branch is unfinished. The bases of AME in AMERICA are connected. The present piece exhibits a dramatic late die state. A network of at least eight die cracks converge upon the portrait, and a relatively large rectangular die break is located on the back of Liberty's jaw. The cataloger is unaware of another example with such advanced cracks, and it is unlikely that many further pieces could have been coined from the shattered obverse die. In contrast, the reverse has two lengthy but slender cracks from the rim to the eagle's shield. Both dies are boldly clashed. Envelope Included.(Registry values: P2)
