Description

Memorable 1855-C Quarter Eagle, MS62

1855-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 16-I. This example survives from a mintage of just 3,677 coins, the lowest annual production total of any Charlotte Mint quarter eagle. Most of the design elements are sharply detailed, with weakness evident among the top stars on the obverse, and the eagle's left facing leg and right claw on the reverse. The planchet is exceptional for this issue. In fact, every aspect of this remarkable Mint State piece far exceeds the typical appearance of most known examples. Both sides have satiny luster with attractive honey-gold color that is accented by wisps of pale orange toning. A small rim break on the outer reverse rim below the denomination is a diagnostic feature of all genuine examples of this issue. Census: 4 in 62, 2 finer (4/07).(Registry values: P2)
