Description

Attractive 1855-D Quarter Eagle Rarity, AU55

1855-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 18-M. Both sides of this elusive Dahlonega issue are toned in rich coppery-gold hues, with a few isolated steel-blue highlights. Although well struck over the central devices, there is extensive crumbling along the denticles in addition to small laminations and hairline cracks in the vicinity of stars 6 through 8. Production of D-mint Quarter Eagles continued to decline in 1855 to a diminutive mintage figure of just 1,123 pieces. The '55-D is considered to be the rarest, or least tied for that honor with the even lower mintage 1856-D as the most elusive Dahlonega issue of the denomination. In addition to the extremely low output, it is also one of the poorest produced D-mint Quarter Eagles, as evidenced by the laminations and planchet cracks already mentioned. AU and finer examples are unquestionably scarce and of the utmost importance to Southern gold specialists. Population: 9 in 55, 3 finer (4/07).(Registry values: P2)
