Description

Elusive 1799 BD-5 Eagle, Unc Details

1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. Breen-6838, Taraszka-17, BD-5, R.6. John Dannreuther estimates that just 22 to 30 examples of his BD-5 die marriage exist today, including two in the present auction. He writes: "As with the first four varieties of 1799, BD-5 is a rarity. In fact, only two varieties of 1799 are available and they are very available."
The reverse die was used only for this single die marriage, and all known examples have a prominent die chip or rust mark between vertical stripes 4 and 5, just inside the lower shield border. It is possible that an earlier die state without that characteristic may exist, and a later state with additional reverse die damage may also exist.
This example has brilliant green-gold patina with frosty luster on both sides. The surfaces exhibit a few faint hairlines that indicate the cleaning, but otherwise it is an exceptional example.(Registry values: P2)
