Description

Impressive Gem 1870-S Half

1870-S 50C MS65 NGC. WB-101, Breen-4953. There is no drapery visible at Liberty's elbow, a popular variant with Seated Liberty half dollar collectors. This is the usually seen variety with a small and complete mintmark. The S mintmark is located below the arrow feather with only the extreme left curve of this letter extending past the left tip of the feather. Very sharply struck with satiny silver luster and hints of pale gold toning over the otherwise brilliant silver surfaces. A delightful and desirable Gem. Both sides have light planchet roller marks, created during planchet production. In most cases, such lines were obliterated during the actual striking process. The single finest survivor known to NGC, and tied with two others at PCGS at the summit of the combined certified population (8/08).
