Choice Proof 1895 Morgan Dollar

1895 $1 PR64 PCGS. Medium apricot patina enriches both sides, while the left obverse margin shows slightly deeper champagne-rose toning. The strike is pinpoint-sharp with two minor exceptions: the highpoints of the curl directly above Liberty's ear, and the eagle's left (facing) claw. As expected of a proof, the denticles are squared off with little evidence of slope toward the field. The major devices exhibit moderate frost, and the piece could be considered a Cameo, although the early generation green label PCGS holder is from an era in third party certification that preceded the Cameo designation. Faint hairlines are customary for the PR64 level, but the reverse appears to pristine, and obverse hairlines are limited to the obverse margins at 3 and 9 o'clock. These only appear when the piece is rotated perpendicular to a light, and viewed beneath a strong loupe. Even then, they are inconsequential, and do not challenge the imposing eye appeal. The focal point of any Morgan dollar is the cheek. On the present near-Gem, the cheek is mark-free. In short, this is a splendid representative of this rare and desirable issue. The 1895 is the sole proof-only date in the series. Mint records indicate 12,000 pieces were struck, and circumstantial evidence is strong that these were in fact coined, rather than simply recorded as a bookkeeping entry. Where they went is subject to speculation, since no business strikes have been authenticated. Perhaps the entire mintage was simply bagged and stored, and eventually melted to fulfill the Pittman Act, along with over 270 million silver dollars of less rare vintage. Without any business strikes to collect, Morgan dollar enthusiasts must turn to the 880 proofs, which are far from sufficient to meet demand.
