Cameo Gem Proof 1898 Silver Dollar
1898 $1 PR65 Cameo NGC. Radiant devices demonstrate obvious contrast with the darkly mirrored fields. The eagle and wreath display especially thick frost. Liberty's cheek and neck are consistently icy, if not quite to the degree needed for an Ultra Cameo designation. Thorough evaluation of the fields beneath a strong lens fails to locate any hairlines. Wisps of milk-gray toning are present on the left obverse field, in the reverse field above the motto, and near the arrowheads. The strike is virtually full, although the naysayer might notice that the hair above Liberty's ear falls just short of a full impression. A scant 735 proofs were struck, and most survivors of this limited production no longer merit consideration as Gem. Census: 8 in 65 Cameo, 16 finer (9/06).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 27ZW, PCGS# 87333, GSID# 7851)
