Description

Important 1926-D Twenty, MS62

1926-D $20 MS62 PCGS. Like its much rarer D-mint counterpart from the following year, the 1926-D double eagle was heavily melted. As described by Garrett and Guth: "The few that did survive were either found overseas or were held back by a handful of wealthy collectors able to keep them through the turmoil of the ensuing few decades."
The present example is strongly appealing for the grade, with lustrous wheat-gold surfaces showing hints of orange. The devices are well struck. Though abrasions below Liberty's flowing hair, at her midsection, and near the olive branch combine to preclude Select status, this remains an important survivor. PCGS has graded just 73 finer examples (6/09).(Registry values: N4719)
