Description

Important 1879-O Type Three Double Eagle

1879-O $20 --Repaired, Cleaned--ANACS. AU58 Details. This is one of the most important dates in the entire Liberty double eagle series, the only issue of the Type Three design modification coined in New Orleans, and the mintage was a minuscule 2,325 coins, one of the smallest production totals of any issue. The New Orleans Mint reopened in 1879 after being dormant through the Civil War and for more than an additional decade after the war was over. Clearly this Louisiana Mint was concentrating on production of Morgan dollars during the year, much like every other Mint that was then in use. This sharply struck example has highly lustrous green-gold surfaces with reflective fields. There is little evidence of either cleaning or repair on the obverse and reverse surfaces of this rarity.(Registry values: N4719)
