Lovely PR63 1836 Gobrecht Dollar
Judd-60 Restrike, Die Alignment IV

1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Restrike, Pollock-65, R.5, PR63 NGC. Silver. Die Alignment IV (Center of Liberty's head opposite the right side of F in OF). The accidental die scratch above the eagle's wing is evident to the unaided eye. These pieces are related to the medallic-oriented Die Alignment II pieces, and each is a so-called Second Original from March 1837. Recent research by Saul Teichman and John Dannreuther have demonstrated that there were four states of the Starry Reverse die. This particular coin is from a later state of the dies as seen by die lapping that increasingly separates the denticles, as well as the lack of the scribe line. These diagnostics place this as a later Restrike. The striking period of these pieces is still uncertain. Another, more easily seen characteristic on later Restrikes is the depth of mirroring in the fields. While all Gobrecht dollars were struck in proof format, those from the 1836-1838 time frame are not as reflective as those pieces struck beginning in 1858. Those coins are comparable to proofs of other denominations struck in that time period.
This piece shows unfathomably deep mirrors in the fields. The striking definition is generally strong throughout with complete details on Liberty's hair and the eagle's breast. Liberty's foot, however, lacks complete definition--a trait common to many Gobrecht dollars. The centers of each side are noticeably lighter in hue than the margins which pick up increasing golden-gray patina toward the rims. Light hairlines explain the grade. A lovely, high grade example of this important 19th century type coin.
