Description
Beautifully Toned Premium Gem 1900 Lafayette Dollar
1900 $1 Lafayette Dollar MS66 PCGS. Ex: JFS Collection. DuVall 2-C. The second S in STATES is repunched, as is the final A in AMERICA. All Lafayette dollars were struck on December 14, 1899, the hundredth anniversary of George Washington's death, and numismatic scholars speculate that the inconsistencies between Lafayette dollar dies are indicative of hasty work. The slipshod production of the dollars themselves lends credence to the hypothesis. The obverse of this enticing dollar has hints of orange and reddish-brown at the margins and a blue-green center, while the reverse displays variegated peach, magenta, aquamarine, cerulean, and cyan toning. Each side exhibits potent luster beneath the rich patina, and the focal areas are surprisingly clean. PCGS has certified a mere five coins finer (3/07).
