Description
Highly Desirable 1858 Liberty Seated Dollar, PR63
1858 $1 PR63 PCGS. Although the Guide Book gives an estimated mintage for the 1858 of at least 300 proofs, Bowers' Encyclopedia estimates that 225 to 300+ proofs were struck. The actual mintage has been the subject of debate within the numismatic community for the past 150 years, with estimates varying widely. NGC and PCGS report a combined total of 156 specimens, some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions. Perhaps the actual surviving population numbers slightly over 100 pieces. This is the sole proof-only issue in the Liberty Seated dollar series, with the exception of the 1866 No Motto, of which only two are known. Highly desired by many collectors, some of whom are not even interested in the series, the 1858 is one of the most famous numismatic rarities of all time. The present piece is brilliant and boldly struck, with eye-catching deeply mirrored fields. Scattered hairlines limit the grade and there is a tiny blemish below the date. A number of minuscule milk spots are noted on the reverse. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire this popular and seldom-seen issue.(Registry values: N4719)
