Description

Pleasing 1925-S Twenty Dollar, MS62

1925-S $20 MS62 PCGS. The high mintage figure of over 3.77 million pieces does not represent the true scarcity of the 1925-S double eagle, as vast quantities were melted during the 1930s. Fewer than 600 coins are believed known today in all grades, making it one of the major rarities in the Saint-Gaudens series (James Halperin, et al., The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens).
The rich orange-gold coloration of this MS62 example displays light green highlights. A well executed strike leaves relatively strong definition on the design elements, though weakness is evident in Liberty's right (facing) foot. Pleasing luster is seen on both sides, though it is not quite full. A few minute handling marks help account for the grade.(Registry values: N4719)
