Description

Coveted 1926-D Double Eagle, MS62

1926-D $20 MS62 PCGS. Like the other Denver double eagle issues coined from 1924 on, the 1926-D has an all but meaningless mintage, the figure of 481,000 pieces more useful for estimating how many examples were melted than how many survive. While the Philadelphia version for that date was heavily exported and later repatriated, few D-mint pieces ever left that Mint, the vast majority sitting in vaults until their condemnation in the early days of the Roosevelt administration.
The double eagle offered here was likely one of the few recovered from overseas, as the surfaces show a number of abrasions, particularly in the right obverse field. Yet the coin retains significant eye appeal, aided by the strong luster of the yellow-gold fields. Well-defined and important, a desirable representative of this elusive issue.(Registry values: N4719)
