Description
Pleasing 1839-D Quarter Eagle, MS62 PCGS
1839-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1-A, McCloskey-A, R.3. The 1-A is the more frequently seen of the two varieties, and is most easily attributed by the branch stem over the denomination that was weakened by die lapping. Of the 13,674 pieces struck, it is estimated that today some 150-175 examples are known of both varieties in all grades. PCGS and NGC combined have certified only about 25 Mint State examples, some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions. The present coin displays bright yellow-gold surfaces and adequately struck design elements, though the left (facing) outline of the shield and adjacent eagle's feathers are soft. Minor handling marks over each side limit the grade. A very pleasing coin overall that will not disappoint the gold specialist. Population: 4 in 62, 3 finer (1/06).(Registry values: P4)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25G5, PCGS# 7700, GSID# 8260)
Metal: 89.92% Gold, 10.08% Copper
Weight: 4.18 grams
