Description
1850-O $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. The mintage of 84,000 pieces seems considerable only in comparison to the tiny mintages of many other issues from this era and, in fact, the 1850-O is scarce and underrated. There are 130 specimens graded AU55 or higher at both services. The color is an appealing honey-gold. The obverse strike is unusual, with stars 1, 7, and 13 lacking central detail, while the reverse strike is typically weak on the eagle. The light wear and minor abrasions are consistent with the grade. The lower obverse shows light evidence of die clashing. Census: 44 in 55, 56 finer (1/06).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25HK, PCGS# 7758, GSID# 8364)
