Description

Attractive Choice XF 1843-C Half Eagle

1843-C $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 6-C. The mintmark is nearly centered above the V in FIVE on the reverse of this 6-C. This reverse variant is scarcer than the usual reverse, with the mintmark over the right side of the V. Approximately 95 to 105 examples are known to exist, primarily in VF and XF grades, and most pieces display heavily abraded surfaces. The present example has honey-gold surfaces that are imbued with grayish-green undertones, and traces of luster in some of the protected areas. The design elements are generally well defined, though the eagle's breast, neck, and right leg feathers are characteristically soft. Miniscule ticks are evenly distributed over each side, but the surfaces are more attractive than typically seen.
