Description

Scarce 18895-O Dollar, MS61

1895-O $1 MS61 NGC. The 1895-O is one of the scarcer issues in the Morgan dollar series. In a February 15, 2005 Numismatic News article about the 1895-O, Paul Green writes that this low mintage coin (450,000 pieces) was not heavily saved. He goes on to say that whatever was not released into circulation was probably destroyed when hundreds of millions of silver dollars were melted under the Pittman Act.
This MS61 specimen displays electric-blue, lavender, and golden-brown toning concentrated at the borders. While most examples are poorly struck, the design elements on this piece show nice detail, including at least partial definition in the centers. A few localized contact marks on each side limit the grade.(Registry values: P9, N4719)
