Description

Rare Experimental 1964 SMS Lincoln Cent

1964 1C SMS MS68 Red PCGS. At first glance, there does not appear to be anything out of the ordinary about this coin. On closer inspection, one finds that this is a completely different striking than the normal 1964 cents. The surface has a satin finish, and a much better than normal strike. This distinctive and rare variety was discovered by Stack's, in 1993-94, when they were consigned to a sale by a dealer who, reportedly, obtained them from a mint employee. They were tentatively identified as being a prototype for the Special Mint Sets that were struck starting in 1965. PCGS has certified it as "SMS," for Special Mint Set. No matter the name designation, it is an interesting and rare variety. As indicated by the photo image, the coin seems mark-free and displays a bright pink-red color overall. Population: 2 in 68, 0 finer (12/04).(#3284) (Registry values: P1)
