Description

Lustrous Mint State 1798 B-23, BB-105 Bust Dollar

1798 $1 Large Eagle MS61 ANACS. B-23, BB-105. R.3. A satiny mint coin that is bright silver-gray in color with ample luster in the fields. The strike is very sharp for this date, with strong definition on Liberty's curls and the stars above the eagle, areas which are frequently lacking in detail, even on high grade coins. Around the periphery we note splashes of darker gold on the reverse, less so on the obverse. A few nicks are found with a glass, including one on Liberty's neck and another nestled between the two top curls on Liberty, each of which should help identify this coin in the future. Certainly in the condition census for the variety, as very few mint state coins are found of any variety, and this one is certainly amongst the finest. Early die state as are most seen, with no die cracks seen. An important coin for the specialist.
